The danger of reform math, is that the math in high school is traditional math and the students never developed the foundation to continue with math at a higher level.
Yes very true. But not to worry; there is a movement being pushed by Steve Leinwand and Eric Milou to make the high school math curriculum every bit as ineffective as the primary levels.
Parents must make an effort to force the hands of Government. They must demand a streamlined curriculum, not one that depends on the whims of a teacher. Sometimes assignments are posted on nearpod, where the content was not included in the classroom instructions. The teachers never examine the questions they purchase from these organisations to see whether it is compatible with what was taught in the classroom.
Teachers sometimes have no choice but to adhere to the dictates of their school's administration, or face retribution. In other schools, admin will look the other way if a teacher is getting good results using traditional methods. It really depends on the school, and the district.
Almost 10 years since this piece was written. Evidence that math scores continue to drop nationwide, yet we (including myself) continue to do the same thing....smh
it won't change unless parents boycott their kids from the classroom, forcing things to change.

this piece is still one of my favourites, because everything written is still so true and will always be. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. It's sad to me that it's still true and that nothing has changed.
