“The emphasis is now on big concepts.”

Here in Western Australia, there is a huge emphasis on teaching the whys, almost more than the basics. For instance, the full explanation is what pi is, rather than its value and function, is seen as necessary.

I went to school in 60s and 70s Ireland, a traditional society. I never learnt what pi meant, but I did learn its use. One Maths colleague here in WA suggested that was this lack was why I’d didn’t complete advanced maths. I countered that I did master differential calculus, so I did quite well. He did concede the point.
