Welcome to Traditional Math. My short bio: I majored in math, used it in the environmental field, retired and became a math teacher.
I believe strongly in how math should be taught and even more strongly in how it should not be taught. Nevertheless, when I am involved in teaching it as I believe it should be taught, (which happens to be in the traditional mode) I feel vaguely guilty, as if I am doing something against the rules and perhaps even wrong. The traditional mode of teaching math has been slowly and steadily displaced over the past three decades by reform methods and are seen mostly in the lower grades.
This series will be part of a book called “Traditional Math: An Effective Strategy that Teachers Feel Guilty Using”, to be published by John Catt Educational. The series covers key math topics in 7th and 8th grades, including algebra for 8th grade. Earlier grades will also be covered in the book, but will be written by my co-author.
Enjoy the series and please feel free to comment, or ask questions.
